Hey everyone! So this is my friend Ashley. Ashley, who is a natural brunette, had been getting partial blonde highlights for quite a while. The blonde had been fun, but it was starting to become a lot of maintenance for her because her natural color was so dark. Also, as you can see in the before pictures, because she was only getting a partial highlight her ends were looking a lot darker than the rest of her hair because the underneath wasn't getting colored. So ultimately we wanted to be able to give Ashley some blonde highlights like she wanted, but we wanted to create a more natural looking result that would be easier for her to grow out. We decided to go with a soft ombre look. Essentially we "flipped" the look she had by taking her darker on top and heavily highlighting the underneath. As you can see the darker color near her face helps to warm her skin up, but she still has some bright blonde highlights, but with a lot more dimension. This look will be something she can expect to maintain every 3 months vs. every 6 weeks.

Classic Styles Gone Modern: Jane Eyre

So I recently watched the new Jane Eyre movie with Mia Wasikowska, and I love the classic hair styles that you see throughout the film. The clean middle part, the neat bun, and the hair draped over the ears. It's not always easy to bring classic hairstyles into the modern era, but I found some styles that I think interpret the look well.

I love how the braids are incorporated. And remember, braids are really in this year.

This look from Alexander McQueen has the same basic structure as Jane's look, but definitely has some modern flair.

This style on Nicky Hilton is a little less dramatic with the hair pulled back, but it still maintains that classic structure and is very elegant.

So find an classic style you like and see how you can freshen it up (or come see me =) ). Don't be afraid to go old school!!

Charlotte Fashion's Night Out and Charlotte Fashion Week

It's fall which means all the fashion shows are back in Charlotte. We just did Fashion's Night Out last week and we have Fashion Week coming up this week. There was a huge turn out for FNO and it was great to see the collaborative efforts of all the other salons and boutiques! The clothes and hair were really top notch and it's exciting to see Charlotte taking these steps into the world of fashion. It's just going to keep on getting better. I had no idea how many cool boutiques we had in Charlotte that were offering some very cool clothes. Our awesome team at the salon did hair and makeup for Revolution which is located in the Epicentre and Petal which is on East Blvd. If you want to stand out this fall don't head to the mall - check out a local business instead and find something that's unique. I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about them, but I've had them in for two weeks now and I love them. You can brush through them, blowdry them, curl them... and they still maintain their shape and color. They come in all sizes and colors and it only takes a few minutes to put them in. Easy Summer Updos With the Spin Pin

So I don't know why I haven't seen this tiny contraption before, but I saw someone at the pool this weekend with it and it's awesome! It's called the Spin Pin and it's made by Goody. I think they normally run about $6 at the drug store. It's about the easiest way I've seen to quickly throw your hair up in a bun or loose chignon and still have a secure hair style. So awesome for quickly throwing your hair up if you've been at the pool or the beach. I've posted a tutorial video below that shows you how it works. It's a tad lengthy, but you can skip through it. Some Serious Balayage/Ombre Hair Color

Lately I've been doing so much balayage. The word about how hot this trend is has really started to make its way around Charlotte. Most of the color I've been doing has been on the softer side, but I wanted to post these two pictures of some more extreme blayage/ombre looks.

This first picture is of actress Katherine Moennig and is a little bit softer, but still shows a drastic level change from her dark roots to the golden blonde tips. This is a fun style for a brunette that wants to try some fun color but isn't ready to make a huge commitment.

This second picture of Drew Barrymore is a LOT more drastic, but I still love it. Despite the huge contrast, the colors are beautiful and it's a fun way to have two extremes.

The Sassoon Autumn/Winter 2011 collection is one of the craziest I've seen from them yet. It's called Tribe and it showcases some very bold colors and whimsical makeup. In this collection we see a trend that is popping all over the runway and in other hair collections, and that is bleached out eyebrows. It definitely makes for a fun look, but speaking from the experience of doing my own, I can tell you that it is a lot of maintenance. Check out this first picture: yes, the model's hair color is a bit bold for most people's everyday wear, but notice the placement. The bold panels create really awesome contrast. Next time you're looking for dimension, ask your stylist for some panel or block color instead of highlights, or a one color single process. Also check out the lovely melting in the second picture. Great example of intense ombre. But remember, you can do this with more natural shades as well.

I'm In Love With Lily Aldridge's Balayage Hair! Victoria's Secret model Lily Aldridge has the most beautiful balayaged hair. Her highlights are the perfect color for that care-free summer look. Sun-kissed and super low maintenance if you're planning a lot of trips to sunny locations. Balayage is a french technique that means "to sweep." Hair color is brushed onto the hair without the use of foils to create that softer, melted look. And the great thing is that you don't have to get it touched up every 4-6 weeks like a heavy foil. Now I understand that the "root" look is hard for some people to rock, but the technique can be modified or combined with a base color for a lighter effect. Keep in mind though how pretty her skin looks in contrast to the dark hair framing her face. A full head of golden highlights would wash her out, but the cascading golden ends melted from her natural color makes for the perfect combination. Consider balayage hair color for your look this summer in Charlotte! It's a great way to try out highlights if you've never had them before as well!

Charlotte Passport For Fashion

There are only a few tickets left for the Passport For Fashion fundraiser fashion show and food and wine tasting. It's this Saturday at the NC Music Factory in the REEL WORKS production warehouse. Proceeds from the show go to raising awareness about saving the environment. The show is going to be huge with many local designers and artisans contributing. Eight fashion shows in all, including a segment showcasing couture gowns made from recycled materials. Re Salon and Medspa is contributing hair and makeup for designer Beth Pilger's clothing line. We also have tried our hand at dress design and will be contributing a piece for the recycled fashion show. Wish us luck and come out to show your support!!! I'll try to post pictures as soon as we get them as well!

These are a few pictures from a photoshoot I did with Carmen! Carmen! before coming to Re Salon and Medspa. I did the model's color and styling. This model's color was done with Aveda Full Spectrum in bright and intense shades of Red/Red and Orange/Red.
